Winter in south east Queensland is a glorious time to go boating. The days are clear, dry and warm and, as a group of Whitehaven owners recently found, there are plenty of anchorages and bays to discover.
As a prelude to the Whitehaven Whitsunday Adventure currently underway, a group of five passionate Whitehaven owners congregated on the Gold Coast for a mini mid-winter getaway. Starting at the Southport Yacht Club, the flotilla spent five days discovering all the Broadwater and Moreton Bay had to offer.
Part of the group was Kieran and Desiree onboard their Whitehaven 6000 Coupe. The Sydney-siders had taken the opportunity to escape the winter (and the virus) with the ultimate goal of heading north to the Whitsundays; joining the Gold Getaway was just an added bonus.
“Moreton Bay exceeded all of our expectations. There were so many anchorages, bays and places to go which we wouldn’t have experienced if it were not for the planning and expertise of Bruce and the team. He and Julie are the greatest hosts. You really feel the warmth of their hospitality,” stated Kieran.
Starting at the Southport Yacht Club, the group cruised up to the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron’s clubhouse down the bay, Canaipa. This anchorage is very protected in the lee of both North Stradbroke and Russell Islands. Next was Myora to discover the naturally occurring springs and enjoy some of the best sunsets found on Moreton Bay.
After a quick trip to Little Ships Club at Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island, the motor yachts cruised up to the region’s namesake and the jewel in the crown, Moreton Island. They dropped anchor at the Sandhills and head ashore for a wine tasting with a difference.
Kieran continued, “It is hard to pick our favourite spot in the itinerary yet certainly, Moreton Island was the most picturesque and intriguing. During our onshore wine tasting, a diamond python made an impromptu visit clearly looking for freshwater. We gave it a drink and it was on its way. It is certainly an experience we are unlikely to forget anytime soon.”
Kieran and Desiree purchased their Whitehaven three years ago as a brokerage boat but that has not diminished their experience. “Clearly these boats have been designed and built with some serious cruising in mind. The boat handled the ocean passage and bay cruising superbly. However, for us, what makes the difference is the storage. We will have our children and grandchildren onboard with all their clothes, toys, food and drinks yet there is no tripping over gear. It just makes for a much more enjoyable boating experience only made better by being part of the great Whitehaven family,” offered Kieran.
